In 2019, SE24 installed a 25-kW solar array on the roof of Walworth Methodist Church (WMC), London SE5, which hosts a wide range of community activities as well as a large multi-ethnic congregation. As part of the project, SE24 offered to contribute £800 from our Community Fund to the WMC Peace Garden created to symbolise efforts to remove knife crime from our streets. For various reasons, including Covid, the donation was unable to be made for its originally intended purpose.
In the meantime, the aged heating system in the church premises finally broke down completely and WMC has recently had to install two new boilers to heat the premises (see the ‘before’ and ‘after’ photos of their plant room). SE24’s Board therefore decided to make good on our commitment to support WMC and in February this year we made an £800 contribution towards the high cost of their heating project.
As part of our ongoing relationship with WMC, we recently submitted a grant application to the Southwark Community Energy Fund. If successful, this will support LED lighting feasibility assessments at WMC and 5 other community premises across the Borough.
